The Power of Mindset: How Your Thoughts and Beliefs Impact Your Energy Levels

Do you tend to look on the sunny side, or do you see a future filled with dark, stormy skies? Do you believe you have what it takes to respond to any situation to the best of your ability?

Hey there, busy superwoman! As a woman juggling multiple roles and responsibilities like you, I know just how demanding life can be. But here's the thing: it doesn't have to leave you feeling exhausted, drained, and unmotivated.

To me, often it's not the physical fatigue, but the mental exhaustion that weighs me down even more and I went down the rabbit hole to learn about the fascinating connection between mindset and energy levels. As you and I both know, our thoughts and beliefs can either drain or elevate our energy.

A study conducted by the University of Rochester confirms this: it found that people who had a more positive outlook on life had more energy and were less likely to feel fatigued. The study also found that people who had a more positive outlook on life were more likely to engage in physical activity, which can also help improve energy levels further.

Let's explore it further, shall we?

The Science Behind Mindset

The science behind mindset is a fascinating field of study that explores how our thoughts and beliefs can impact our energy levels. According to cognitive psychologist Robert French, mindset reflects the cognitive processes that occur when we’re presented with a given situation or task. In other words, our mindest manifests in how we react and respond to stimuli. Some people respond to a situation with a more positive outlook while others tend to think of worst case scenarios that impaired them from taking appropriate actions. So, take some time to refelct - is your glass often half full or it is half empty most of the time?

Having a positive outlook doesn’t mean you never feel negative emotions, such as sadness or anger, says Dr. Barbara L. Fredrickson, a psychologist and expert on emotional wellness at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. “All emotions—whether positive or negative—are adaptive in the right circumstances. The key seems to be finding a balance between the two,” she says.

In the study conducted by the University of Rochester mentioned earlier, through brain imaging, the researcher (Davidson) found that positive emotions can trigger or activate a part of the brain called the ventral striatum. “Individuals who are able to savor positive emotions have lasting activation in the ventral striatum,” Davidson says. According to him, the longer this brain area is activated, the greater the feeling of wellbeing is felt by the individual. Apart from the feel good feeling, the study also found that continued activation of this part of the brain has been linked to healthful changes in the body, including lower levels of a stress hormone.

Negative emotions, in contrast, can activate a brain region known as the amygdala, which plays a role in fear and anxiety. People with chronic and longer activation of the amygdala are shown to be at risk of a variety of unfavorable health conditions compared to those with less active amygdala.

The Impact of negative thinking on Energy

When we consistently engage in negative thoughts, we create a cycle of self-doubt, stress, and anxiety that drains our energy reserves. Negative thinking that results in emotions such as fear and anxiety consumes our mental and emotional energy, leaving us feeling exhausted, unmotivated, and stuck in a state of negativity. It can impact our ability to focus, make clear decisions, and take productive action towards our goals.

Moreover, negative thoughts can trigger the release of stress hormones like cortisol, further depleting our energy levels. Breaking free from negative thinking patterns is crucial for restoring our energy and vitality. Change your thoughts, change your reality and your life.

"Your thoughts are like the artist's brush. They create a personal picture of the reality you live in." - Sydney Banks

Understanding Your Current Mindset: Identifying Limiting Beliefs

Another aspect of mindset that can significantly impact your energy is the presence of limiting beliefs. These are deep-rooted beliefs that hold you back from reaching your full potential and can unneccesarily drain your energy.

Limiting beliefs often manifest in your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, and they can create a negative cycle of self-doubt that depletes your energy. Here are a few examples of common limiting beliefs that can hold women entrepreneurs back from reaching their full potential. Can you relate to any of these beliefs?

"I'm not experienced or knowledgeable enough to succeed in my industry."
"I need to do everything perfectly, or I'll be seen as a failure."
"I don't have enough time to focus on my business and still take care of my family."
"I'm not good at sales or promoting myself, so I'll never be able to grow my business."
"I don't deserve success or financial abundance."

It's important to recognize and challenge these beliefs in order to break free from their constraints and cultivate a growth mindset to empower your business and personal journey.

How to cultivate a positive mindset & change your limiting beliefs

Cultivating positive or growth mindselt and overcoming limiting beliefs can be challenging, but it is possible. Here are some strategies that you can use to change your mindset and overcome your limiting beliefs:

  • Identify your limiting beliefs: The first step in overcoming limiting beliefs is to identify them. Write down the beliefs that are holding you back and examine them closely.
  • Challenge your limiting beliefs: Once you have identified your limiting beliefs, challenge them. Ask yourself if they are really true or if they are just assumptions that you have made. If they are not fact, try to replace them with more positive and empowering beliefs.
  • Be your own best advocate: This is actually my life purpose. First and foremost, I want to be my own best advocate. Why? We are often our worst critique. By replacing our negative to more positive self-talk, we empower ourselves to take the next step.
  • Surround yourself with positive people: Surrounding yourself with positive people can help you stay motivated and focused on your goals. Seek out people who inspire you and who believe in you.
  • Take action: Taking action is one of the most effective ways to overcome your limiting beliefs. Start small and take steps towards your goals every day. Celebrate your successes along the way and don’t be too hard on yourself when things don’t go as planned.
